Positive vibes after making gains in the wet
Checo and Lance gained crucial knowledge of the RP20 in wet conditions during a productive opening day of running for Formula 1’s 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Our boys racked up 55 laps between them in changeable conditions during FP1, with both able to show a good turn of pace too – initially using the hard compound tyres before switching to the softs.
Once on the fastest compound they set a series of fast laps, as Checo secured P3 with a 1:16.530 lap time. Lance was in close pursuit and took P4 after lapping in 1:16.967.
FP2 began in wet conditions. Not to be deterred, we sent both cars out to gain valuable understanding of the RP20 in the conditions, with Checo and Lance completing five and six laps respectively.
It was enough to demonstrate the improvements made since Austria as Lance took P4 with a 1:42.380 and Checo P5 in 1:42.380.
There was also time for a single lap outing on the intermediates to round off a good day’s work.
Checo: “Today was a good opportunity to prove that we had found improvements in wet conditions compared to Austria. That gives me confidence for tomorrow – regardless of the conditions.
“I think we can target a place in Q3 and build from there.
“Everyone was on different programmes today and there was only the one practice session in ideal conditions, but I think we’ve made a good step in further understanding our car.”
Lance: “The car felt good and we hit the ground running today.
“It was a shame there was rain this afternoon, but we worked to improve our understanding of the car in the wet. I think we’ve made a good step in those conditions compared to last weekend, which is a positive.
“There’s the potential for mixed conditions this weekend and the important thing is that we look strong in the dry too. Allin all, it was a useful day.”
